Formal Gathering, No. 2
Acrylic on board
18 x 24 inches
Formal Gathering, No. 2 continues the compositional language of the series while introducing new elements of medium and color. Executed in matte acrylics, the surface is ultra-opaque and even, with thin but subtly textured shapes achieved through masking and the rolling application of paint. The landscape of towering black silhouettes repeats the primitive and ceremonial monumental forms of No. 1, but here a golden yellow color field replaces the white ground, altering the psychological and emotional effect. The familiar black shapes are periodically interrupted by white forms and a single red shape, creating dynamic balance and visual tension. This work is a formal exploration of how medium and color transform the effects of established abstract forms. The title underscores both the careful arrangement of these forms and their anthropomorphic presence — a congregation of abstract figures in quiet ceremony.
