Block Drawing, No. 3
Charcoal and graphite on paper
19 x 24 inches
Block Drawing, No. 3 continues the iterative exploration of the series, mirroring the composition of the previous drawing while flipping the visual weight of dark shapes top to bottom. The work explores how subtle shifts in weight can influence perception, creating moments that might feel visually oppressive or subtly anxiety-inducing.
Faint graphite guidelines remain, exposing some of the scaffolding underlying the composition. The charcoal surface combines techniques from earlier drawings, layering and then burnishing to create a pockmarked texture reminiscent of concrete, reinforcing the reference to Brutalist materials. The piece negotiates tension between restraint and experimentation, maintaining equilibrium through deliberate control of form and medium.
