Block Drawing, No. 1
Charcoal on paper
19 x 24 inches
Block Drawing, No. 1 is the first in a series of minimalist geometric charcoal drawings. The work explores contrasts between dense dark fields and sharp interruptions of light, balancing formal control with the unpredictability of the medium. The surface was achieved through a meticulous process of gradually building up and polishing layers of charcoal, creating an ultra-smooth finish.
The compositions and forms were initially inspired by Brutalist architectural silhouettes seen in New Haven. They grew to be, in part, meditations on existence — presence within absence. The work negotiates tension and balance between restraint and exploration, form and material, chaos and order — a dynamic that would continue across the series.
